Our Role: Constructional Timber were employed by William Anelay to carry out the design, manufacture, supply and installation of the new feature roof structure, which incorporated five Glulam feature trusses each spanning 15.65m as well as purlins, hip beams and support trusses for a feature cupola. The feature frame was done in GL24h grade European Whitewood glulam (laminated timber) beams with 240 x 300 main members. The metalwork was galvanised mild steel and all visible connections required dome headed nuts.

The trusses on this project were pre-fabricated in our factory to reduce the on-site installation time. This presented its own challenges including transport and lifting requirements as the hip trusses alone weighed in at 4 tonnes each.

Leicester City Council bought the factory, and other buildings in this grade II-listed complex next to the River Soar. The site also includes Leicester’s oldest surviving factory building – the former Donisthorpe Factory – which was badly damaged in a fire in 2012.

The main factory building has been restored and an extension built to house a new staircase and lift. The fire damaged roof, along with its original cupola and weathervane, has been completely rebuilt.
