The National Stone Centre

Due to the different service class environments within this project, two species of glulam were used. European Whitewood was used for the internal areas with European Larch used externally. Where the beams went from internal to external, the Whitewood beams were coated with a pigmented stain to provide UV protection and all end grains were capped with Iroko to minimise the ingress of moisture. All glulam columns were European Larch. Between the glulam beams were loose joists with a plywood covering for the green roof. With a very tight site programme, all the columns and rafters were sent to site bolted up in pairs with the metalwork prefitted.
