Great Yarmouth Market

The new market structure in Great Yarmouth is a landmark European larch Glulam frame that has played a key role in transforming the town centre. Designed as a welcoming, contemporary canopy for traders and visitors alike, the exposed timber structure brings warmth, scale, and identity to the heart of the town. The use of European larch gives the frame a durable, natural finish that will weather gracefully over time, reinforcing the market’s role as a long-term civic asset.

The large-scale Glulam frame was precision-engineered and manufactured offsite, ensuring consistent quality and accuracy across the project. Offsite fabrication allowed complex detailing and structural coordination to be resolved in advance, enabling a smooth and efficient installation process. The scale of the frame demonstrates glulam’s ability to deliver robust, long-span structures while maintaining a light and elegant architectural presence.

Construction was carefully planned and delivered in phases to minimise disruption to the market traders and maintain day-to-day trading throughout the build. This phased approach, combined with offsite manufacture, reduced time on site and allowed each section of the structure to be erected quickly and safely. The result is a highly efficient, visually striking Glulam market hall that supports local commerce while showcasing the benefits of engineered timber in busy public spaces.
