Hemel Hempstead Crematorium
Situated adjacent to the new Poppy Fields Cemetery, Hemel Hempstead Crematorium was built to cope with the rising demand for cremations in the local area. The new build crematorium provides a chapel for 136 people, with additional standing room for 115 people alongside associated services including congregation, crematory, administration, and staff spaces.
Through years of planning the main aim of this project was to create a tranquil space that has been carefully set up to manage the journey of mourners through the crematorium emphasising modern grieving practices by creating non-denominational spaces for people to grieve and celebrate life.
Constructional Timber was tasked with the design, manufacture, supply and installation of this magnificent structure. The build utilises a mixture of European whitewood and larch glulam each coated with a clear preservative and topcoat to assist in protecting the beams during the installation process.
Hemel Hempstead Crematorium has been designed to provide as much natural light as possible. The columns used are around 5.5m tall and are connected using both carpentry joints and mechanical fixings. The ‘concealed’ connections were all fabricated using galvanised mild steel and preassembled prior to delivery. This decreased the installation time and minimised any potential misalignment during erection.
The overall structure showcases the power of nature-inspired architecture to create spaces of solace and reflection. The careful selection and utilisation of these timbers not only enhance the structural integrity and aesthetic appeal but also infuse the crematorium with a sense of tranquillity and emotional support. As visitors step into this extraordinary space, they are greeted by the enduring beauty of European larch and European whitewood which provides mourners with solace during their time of remembrance.
